How to Recognize and Overcome Forgetfulness

Are you having a hard time remembering names, phone numbers, and other important dates? Do you constantly misplace your car keys or forget were you parked it in a parking lot? When leaving the house to run errands, do you go back in the house to make sure you locked the doors or turned off all the appliances? Do you often forget how to spell a common word? If you answered yes to any of these questions, here's some good news: there is a solution!

With a few simple devices, it's within most people's power to have a super memory. Age is not the reason you are being forgetful. You need to focus more on what you are doing and pay more attention to the tasks at hand.

First remember to remember. If you are trying to remember the name of someone, try to reinstate as much as possible of what your know surrounding the person. Face, color or hair, car they drive, house they live in, doing this exercise will help you memory to recall that persons name.

Make a picture in your mind about those keys as you place them on the table. Slow down and make yourself picture were you parked that car. Using your vocal cords will also help you to remember different things. Talking to yourself is not crazy, it allows you to re-enforce what you want to remember. Make lists. Lists are always a good for a memory boots. Our short-term memory has limited capacities, there's only so much space available. Writing out lists helps to assure you of remembering what is important to you.

Read, read, and read some more. If you're having a problem forgetting words, it's probably because you don't use them enough. Your vocabulary is rusty, so the more words you put into your memory the more you'll remember.

Many things can contribute to forgetfulness. At the root of some forgetfulness is liquor or certain drugs such as diet pills, blood pressure medication, or antihistamines. Check with your doctor if you believe they maybe affecting your memory.
